Results of the OSSATE 2nd International Workshop,
Athens 8 - 9 September 2005

Introduction

The OSSATE Project Team at the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism, together with EWORX S.A., organised the second OSSATE International Workshop held in Athens on 8 and 9 September 2005.

The event was attended by over 120 delegates from 13 countries, representing 86 organisations drawn from the tourism sector, consumer groups, research organisations and public authorities.

The workshop was opened by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. A. Liaskos and Mrs. E. Bernidaki-Aldous, Member of the Greek Parliament with special responsibility for issues concerning people with disabilities. Other distinguished speakers included Mr. G. Drakopoulos, Executive Director of the Hellenic Association of Tourist Enterprises (SETE), and Mr. S. Stavrianopoulos, President of the National Centre for the Rehabilitation of Disabled People.

During the meeting, more than 20 presentations were given by specialists and business leaders from Europe, Israel and the USA. The OSSATE team presented their findings from a survey of accessible tourism information schemes in Europe, and participants discussed how accessibility information can be used to promote tourist destinations and to help customers find and choose the type of facilities they want.

The workshop ended with a guided tour of the Acropolis of Athens and Acropolis Museum, which have been made accessible for wheelchair users by means of a lift which ascends the west wall of this World Heritage site.
